ACS hosts 22 African countries, WHO-AFRO, CSOs on Policy Coordination Workshop in Johannesburg Representatives of Ministries of Health from 22 African countries, the WHO Afro Region, and CSOs are currently attending a Policy Coordination Workshop in Johannesburg, South Africa. The Workshop, which was organised by the American Cancer Society holds from January 30 to 31. South Africa takes the lead in signing the Illicit Trade Protocol South Africa leads other Africa countries to sign the Illicit Trade Protocol when it opened for signature in Geneva on January 10. Gabon and Libya also signed on the same day alongside China, France, Myanmar, Nicaragua, Panama, Republic of Korea, South Africa, Syrian Arab Republic, Turkey and Uruguay. COP5 Ends on Very Positive Note for Africa The Conference of the Parties to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control ended in Seoul, with significant success especially in the adoption of the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade (ITP), without any changes, and on tax and price measures. Stakeholders Hold M&E Meeting for TC Projects in Africa A meeting on monitoring and evaluation of tobacco control efforts in Africa was held at the American Cancer Societyoffice in Atlanta, to share ideas and develop common Monitoring & Evaluation framework for tobacco control in the Region. The meeting agreed on the way forward for developing modalities to facilitate synergies, compare findings and generate lessons. Parties to WHO Global Treaty - FCTC Meet in Seoul The 176 Parties to the Global Treaty, the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) meet for their fifth session (COP5) in Seoul, 12-17 November. They represent governments that have agreed to implement a range of tobacco control measures in the FCTC – from putting graphic warnings on tobacco packages, to banning tobacco advertising, and creating smoke-free spaces. network development_and_outreachThis component involves developing and implementing an outreach and alliance building plan that focuses on enhancing Alliance membership and maintaining regional and sub-regional communication systems and strategies. We map and analyze the reach of existing advocacy networks in terms of membership, geographical and thematic spread. Read more

Taxation Campaign

 The ATCC intends to coordinate campaigns aimed at increasing tobacco taxes within its priority countries and the ECOWAS/WAEMU sub-regional blocs. We also offer technical assistance to ATCC grantees working on campaigns to raise tobacco taxes. Read more

Resource CenterWe maintain a Tobacco Control Advocacy Resource Center that aims to coordinate and provide technical assistance and training on priority FCTC intervention areas under the guidance of African tobacco control experts. This resource center serves NGOs throughout the SSA region to rapidly access information specific to their needs. Read more

Development CampaignHere, we carry out campaigns to prioritize tobacco control within broader health and development agendas by overseeing outreach to sub-regional blocs including ECOWAS, WAEMU and COMESA. We also assist countries to partake in global tobacco control campaigns. Read more

Technical AssistanceThe ATCC provides technical assistance varied areas including policy development, legislative drafting, coalition-building and management, media advocacy, fundraising and grant management. We also deliver urgent assistance by “rapid response technical assistance teams” assembled to support advocates engaged in time-sensitive work. Read more

Press Release - COP5 Closing

Delegates at COP5 took last-minute decisions that will spare millions of people globally from death due to tobacco use. Representatives of Parties to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) also stood firm against relentless efforts by the tobacco industry to steer them away from adopting measures that would tackle the tobacco epidemic, according to the civil society Framework Convention Alliance (FCA). FCTC Parties met in Seoul, from 12 to 17 November. ATSA Synthesis for Senegal

This is the Senegal country synthesis for the African Tobacco Situational Analysis (ATSA), a two-year initiative of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) with the support of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This is the outcome of overall objectives of the initiative, which are to understand the critical determinants of success for tobacco control in Sub-Saharan Africa, and to inform the development and implementation of tobacco control strategies in Africa.

Uganda

UgandaUganda is an East African country with population of 33,398,682 and a geographical size of 241, 038sq km. With main industry in agricultural related activities, Uganda has a strong base for production of Cotton, Sugar and Tobacco. It is one of the known tobacco producing country in Africa. Gross Domestic Product, (GDP) real growth is put at 6.6%, with purchasing power of $43.22 billion (2009 est.)

FCA Bulletin - Friday, 16 November 2012

Is Codentify complying with the tracking and tracing obligations under the ITP? On Monday, Parties adopted the Protocol to Eliminate the Illicit Trade of Tobacco Products (ITP ). One of the most important obligations under the ITP will be Article 8 on tracking and tracing. Tobacco companies have not waited until 2012 and are already actively promoting their own systems. In 2010, British American Tobacco
(BAT ), Imperial Tobacco Group (IT ), Japan Tobacco International (JTI ) and Philip Morris International (PMI ) agreed to promote
