The ATCC intends to coordinate campaigns aimed at increasing tobacco taxes within its priority countries and the ECOWAS/WAEMU sub-regional blocs. We also offer technical assistance to ATCC grantees working on campaigns to raise tobacco taxes in their respective countries and/or the region as a whole. Activities under this component include:
- Developing and/or adapting information materials on tobacco taxation for use by civil society organizations in Sub-Saharan Africa. This materials may include training materials on tobacco tax as a tobacco control measure, factsheets, and a how to guide to running a tobacco tax campaign;
- Identifying a cadre of experts to support tobacco taxation campaigns;
- Coordinating the tobacco taxation campaign to be run in ECOWAS/WAEMU sub regional economic blocs as well as any other ATCC countries running campaigns to increase tobacco taxes;
- Monitoring and influencing relevant ECOWAS tax policies in relation to tobacco products;
- Providing support (access to technical assistance) to grantees in both ATCC, BI and WHO priority countries as they run the campaigns;
- Developing strong arguments to counter the tobacco industry’s arguments on taxation;
- Coordinating rapid response needs and technical assistance on taxation policies in sub-Saharan Africa
